    Hard Times by Charles Dickens was first published in 1854, during the Victorian Era. One could say that Hard Times is an industrial novel, for it deals with the problems of industrialisation that was spreading all over England. In this novel, Dickens describes the life of Mr Gradgrind, a wealthy school owner, and his children, that he raised according to the "Fact" principle, in the new industrialised town of Coketown. Through this novel, the author is starting to make a satire of this industrial and utilitarian society, where the wealthiest oppress poor people and workers, who are considered like machines. At the same time, Dickens also makes a strong critic of the educational system that only teaches children "Facts" and forbids them any kind of "Fancy" (...)
