    Is the patent system encouraging the progress of science or simply contributing to the spread of AIDS in Africa?

    In 2001, 25 millions of Africans were tested HIV-positive. In certain sub-Saharan area, one in three adults is HIV positive. Several live on 1$ a day while AIDS drugs cost 15,000$ per person, per year. Without adequate treatment these people are without hope.
    Pharmaceutical firms have never been as profitable as they are today. Money invested in R&D allowed Novartis to develop a drug that treat separation anxiety in dogs. Pfizer spent huge amount of money to come up with a revolutionary drug that treat dog Alzheimer's. Absolutely striking! Pharmaceutical firms' interests seem far from the AIDS victims' expectations.
    How could AIDS continue to spread while astounding progress in science is being made? Intellectual property is at the heart of this burning debate. (...)
