    The development of online shopping

    More and more of our daily life is spent interfacing with a computer terminal, which can provide entertainment (e.g. games, films and TV programmes) communication (e.g. email, internet chat rooms and video links), shopping and banking, in addition to work-related use such as emailing and video conferencing. Discuss this situation, and explore some problems caused as a result of these new developments.

    Due to the development of new technologies and the globalisation, the internet is increasingly important in our way of living and shopping; a BBC survey (2006) showed that 24 million UK consumers shopped online in 2005 spending on average £816 each during the year. Kotler and Keller (2005) argue that marketers and especially retailers, such as Amazon or Tesco, see in this new way of communication a means to improve their profitability. Therefore they develop their websites to encourage customers to do shopping online. Fischler (2007) explained that online buying habits have changed dramatically. Thus according to a report made by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), 94% of Britons interviewed had bought something online. Fischler explained also that it become increasingly risky to shop online owing to the increase of websites unchecked. (...)
