    This study aid document provides a translated vocabulary list (English to French) and analysis of an extract from George Orwell's novel 1984, which was written in 1948.

    The main character decides to sit in a small niche in a wall of the living room. It was probably for bookshelves. In this niche, he cannot be seen with the telescope but he can be heard. He can for example have illegal activities. He is probably going to write illegal thoughts in his book.
    In this society, civil liberties are not respected. Thoughts, movements, emotions are observed. They have no privacy. They cannot make their opinions and express themselves freely. If they do it, they are arrested. People are manipulated. They are given false information (...)
