TweeterBrief commentary in English dealing with the short story written by Edgar Allan Po, "The Cask of Amontillado".
Extract:
- Poe uses a lot of adjectives: he focus on the feelings of the characters: "astounded" "astonishment", "a low moaning cry", "loud and shrill screams" "sad voice".
- We can also notice the lexical field of the haste: "unsteadily", "immediatly" "in an instant" "vigorously" "impatient" "I hastened",... which gives to that short story a rythm, a dramatic tension and also a kind of impatience, the reader is waiting for what will happen. That also shows that Montresor is nervous, because he hastened he is neither quiet nor calm.
- We can notice that there is a tragic irony in that excerpt : tragic irony indeed is the fact that the reader know the end of the story while the characters don't know it and some quotes of those characters can be linked to what will happen. Here Montresor says to Fortunato " I must first render you all the little attentions in my power", making reference to the fact that he will immured him alive, but Fortunato does not know that and just think that Montresor is just kind and careful with him.
[...] "The Cask of Amontillado" is a typical Poe short story: first we find in it specificities of the gothic style which is most of the time used by Poe: indeed we can quote here words such as midnight", shrill screams", catacombs", bones",... and the fact that the narrator immured alive Fortunato, that there is a death, which is one of the main themes of poe's works.
