    Extract:

The Untold Lie is actually part of a short story cycle (i.e. a collection of loosely related stories with a unifying principle, theme or character) entitled Winesburg, Ohio and published in 1919. This is a powerful evocation of small-town America dealing with such major themes as incommunicability, loneliness, alienation, truth, and lies. In an article on the genesis and publication history of WO, William L. Phillips shows "the book was conceived as a unit, knit together, however loosely, by the idea of the first tale, 'The Book of the Grotesque', and consisting of individual sketches which derived additional power from each other" (62). Like Irving Howe, many critics have read it as "a fable of American estrangement, its theme the loss of love" (96).

George Willard, a young reporter, is the central consciousness of the book and provides the link between the stories gathered in the collection. The use of a common setting is one more unifying device and the town of Winesburg, Ohio was eventually chosen to give its name to the collection. George is a potential artist figure whose growth we follow throughout the book and who eventually leaves the town to complete his initiation in the city by the end of the collection.

The collection comprises 21 stories, preceded by a kind of prologue entitled "The Book of the Grotesque". This was the title Anderson originally intended to give to his collection, which might lead the reader to look there for possible clues as to the rest of the book (...)
