Network asset management within the electricity distribution industry

Document de 10.5 pages au format WORD

    RÉSUMÉ

The application is intended for use in conjunction with a decision-making approach based on Visual Basic programming language. The user is assumed to have had no previous exposure with Solver and to have only elementary economic notions. The main objective is to improve the interaction between the user and the Solver application. Within this range of applicability, the common nature diagrams of the decision support systems (DSSs) can be used to optimise network asset management in different industries (water supply, sewage treatment, refining and energy distribution).

    Extract:

It is hoped that this study will provide some input to electricity industry developments and related research, and that the network owners will focus on decision-making rather than on technical design considerations. As a personal postlude, this study is a pilot investigation to gain insight to our research using different techniques in operational research. According to the Department of Management Science (University of Strathclyde) whatever methods are brought to bear, it is essential that the operational researcher should be able to take a fresh, creative view of situations and to communicate effectively.
This thesis has explained the comprehensive research methodology used in this study and has demonstrated the feasibility of binary linear programming in the construction of the model by implementing and analysing the results through a Visual Basic Application.
It was not possible to analyse and investigate over real networks with real data and information from Regional Electricity Companies. However, in this report we have provided the methodology for how such analysis could be carried out on a smaller scale. In the future the procedures could be repeated with larger models. The aim of this study is to develop a decision support system that allows the decision-maker to identify the optimal asset management policy.
The study is not intended solely as an academic exercise, but as one that can be applied in industrial situations. For instance, the principle motivation behind performing asset management for electricity distribution networks is the safety aspect, which results from the strong desire to avoid future catastrophic incidents. Studying the effects of faults is required to perform an electrical power distribution. A simulated data set has been developed which allows us to obtain results for capital and non-capital rationing models. (...)
