TweeterRomeo and Juliet is one of the most famous plays by the English poet and playwright, William Shakespeare. It is said to have been written between 1591 and 1595 during the Elizabethan reign. This period was characterized by the rise of the mouvement called Humanism which explored human nature and questioned the reasons of humans' sufferings, this play is a good exemple of that movement. At that time, many subjects were discussed, Shakespeare develops a lot of them, like love or the conflitual societies, which are the predominant elements of the play. Most of the characters of the play are men, so we expect that the play will show men as powerful and strong as they are usually depicted in literature of that time. But we might be mistaken. The question that we must ask ourselves is: what is manhood?
According to the Oxford dictionary, manhood is "the state or period of being a man rather than a child" or "the qualities traditionally associated with men, such as strength and sexual potency".
We can see all these elements in the play, but the real question here is, what is the definition of manhood for Shakespeare? And how manhood is represented in the play? According to Hamlet: what is a man?
