The European Communities called European Union since the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992 is a political and economic community of twenty-seven member states and almost 500 millions people. In this essay, I will make clear the reasons and the means which permits to the EU to become a major world power in economic, trade and monetary terms.
In a first part, I will explain "How the European Communities was created?" and in a second part I will respond to the question "Why the communities were created?"
[...] The first Community was created at the end of the Second World War when reconstructing the economy of the continent European and ensuring the peace between the Europe's victorious and the loser's nations.
The idea of pooling Franco-German coal and steel production came about and the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) were formed. This choice was mainly economic and political because these raw materials were the basis of the industry and power of the two countries. The main objective was to reinforce Franco-German solidarity, stop the spirit of war and open the way to a European integration.
The aim of the Treaty was to contribute, through the common market for coal and steel, to economic increase, growth of employment and a growing standard of living. The Treaty introduced the free movement of products without customs duties or taxes.
The French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, in his declaration of 9 May 1950, proposed that Franco-German coal and steel production must be placed under a common High Authority within the structure of an organisation. The other European countries could join this organisation (...)
