The idea of “cultural industry” was first widely used as a concept by Adorno and Horkheimer in Dialectic of Enlightenment . As for them, the “instrumental rationality” which had become dominant within European thought since the Enlightenment is the historical origin of the cultural industry. They were concerned about a type of reasoning through which groups and individuals were encouraged to pursue particular aims in a “logical” and calculated way “untouched by sentiment”. They argued that this had resulted in a type of science which sought to dominate and subordinate the natural world. The instrumental approach to ends had also led to “exploitative relationships” between human beings; this was particularly noticeable in the relationship between employers and workers.
The development of 1940s European thought, instead of enabling the development of a more enlightened and liberated society, was leading to what they called “ a new kind of barbarism”: the
instrumentalist approach to the world.
The link with our subject is clear, they adopted the term “cultural industry” to argue that the way in which cultural items were produced was analogous to how other industries manufactured vast quantities of goods: the major aim is profit making, and there is the same rationalized organizational procedures which lead to a standardized creation (...)
