    RÉSUMÉ

    This essay looks at the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the various populations that make up the American nation. There are approximately 265 million American citizens: 74.8% of these are of European origin, 11.9% are of African origin, 9.5% are Hispanic, 3.1% Asian and 0.6% Native Indian. The white population is now increasing less rapidly than the population of the minorities, and, as a result, might represent only 50% of the total US population by 2080.
