TweeterThe situation of England within the European Union demonstrates that it's impossible for every one of the States to agree with all of the measures proposed. However, Britain has often been seen as the country which disagrees the most, and which has carved out its own "made-to-measure" way of existing within the union. In order to fully understand the reasons why this is the case it is both necessary and interesting to look back over Britain's past and especially at the period following World War II.

In order to explain the situation concerning Britain and the EU, we have to start with the beginning: the creation of the European Economic Community, which Churchill didn't accept to join because of the Commonwealth, but in view of the fact that the EEC was powerful, they decided to try to join it. They have to wait 16 years as French disagree with their integration. This bad start could be explained by the Second World War. In fact, England was the real winner of this war on a military aspect but also on a national one, and it shows that Britain needn't the help of anybody, and it couldn't see the point of the integration of the EU. We can also see that divided countries like France or Germany for instance needed a project in order to work jointly, and as political parties were much divided in Britain, in fact, the Conservative Party accepted an economic partnership whereas the Labour one thought that the EEC was just a capitalist community. Problems still existed after the integration of the EEC, with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for instance. (...)
