TweeterPresentation about the death penalty and judicial errors in the United States: explanation of the controversy and examples of judicial errors leading to the execution of innocent people.
Extract:
Capital punishment is a controversial issue. Arguments for and against capital punishment are based on moral, practical, religious, and emotional grounds.
Advocates of the death penalty argue that it deters crime, improves the community by making sure that convicted criminals do not offend again, provides closure to victims, is a just penalty for their crime and that no prison has been able to prevent murderers from killing again.
Opponents argue that the death penalty does not deter, does not save money, and that capital punishment cheapens human life and puts government who take guilty lives on the same low moral level as criminals who have taken innocent life. Amnesty International and some activists oppose capital punishment on moral grounds through monitoring cases, mobilizing around upcoming events, and lobbying for anti-death penalty legislation, while the Innocence Project works to free wrongly convicted prisoners, including death row inmates, based on newly available DNA tests.
A study conducted in the United States, which looked at all death-penalty cases across the country from 1973 to 1995, showed that 68 per cent of capital convictions in the United States were eventually overturned, mainly on procedural grounds of incompetent legal counsel, police or prosecutors who suppressed evidence, judges who gave jurors the wrong instructions, mass commutations by governors personally opposed to the death penalty, defence lawyers falling asleep in court, and prosecutors keeping African Americans off the jury when a black defendant was being tried (...)
