Mergers have increased during the last decade and will accelerate in the near future because of the growing international competition. According to an International Labour Organization (ILO) report, "two thirds of mergers fail to achieve their objectives".

The report states that the benefits of merger are "nullified by increased complexity and losses related to top-heavy organizations, while the difficulties of adequately blending cultural and other human factors in the integration of combined enterprises are often underestimated" (...)
