In 1910, Japan annexed Korea. So, Korea was controlled by Japan until it surrendered to the Allied Forces on August the 2nd 1945. As a consequence, during the Yalta conference on February 1945 the USSR and the USA decided to divide Korea into two parts: the United States would administer the southern half of the peninsula and the Soviet Union would take over the area north of the 38th parallel. In fact, the division was meant to be temporary. But in 1948, due to the politics of the Cold War, the UN established two separate nations with diametrically opposed political, economic, and social systems: the Republic of Korea, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In June 1950 the Korean War broke out when North Korea crossed the 38th parallel line to invade the South. Finally, after three years of war, a ceasefire was declared...
