Glossary of French Diplomas

RésuméA set of definitions in English of the main French diplomas (DEUG, DEUG sciences, diplôme d'Etat, maîtrise, MSG, passerelle, diplômes de Grandes Ecoles, etc.).

DEUG Sciences: Preliminary degree course in science subjects. There are six variants: mathematics and information technology for science; material sciences; science and technology for engineering; earth sciences; life sciences; and mathematics for social sciences (MASS).
Diplôme d'État: State-certified diploma. By law, this term can only be used for diplomas that are awarded on programmes recognized by the state. All university programmes terminate in a diplôme d'état (DEUG, DUT, licence, BTS, etc.). Private schools are only allowed to award diplômes d'état if they have passed the visa du diplôme certification procedure...
