Résumé
This three-folded essay deals with the following subject: « Is Art necessary to men? What needs does it fulfill in man? ». Several artworks and artists help illustrate the argumentation.
Extract:
The famous Art Historian Ernest Gombrich emphasizes in his book the importance of Art nowadays but moreover in the History of Humanity. Art was invented way before writing, even if in those times, « artists » were regarded as craftsmen and not artists. Only after the Greek expansion did we realize sculptures, mosaics and such were, after all, works of Art. It leads us to wonder why men feel necessary to create. This question is even more relevant today with art-marketing developing (Jeff Koons is one of the greatest business man and artists and Christie's is seen as an industry !) and culture opening to the middle class (as the polemic attempt of making museums free in France might show)...
