Résumé
In Sula, the 1rst chapter "1919" deals with a twenty-two-year-old black World War I veteran. In 1920 Back at home in the Bottom, shocked by the events of 1917, he decided to create the celebration of National Suicide Day on January 3rd.
The extract under study is located at the beginning of the chapter and ends with the straitjacket episode; so we understand why Shadrack is so much in trouble and know what are his troubles precisely, and retraces Shadrack's history from the front ordeal to the ordeal of the military hospital, this defining and explaining his state of mind, or his apparent madness.
How is madness described and is it possible to cure it?
First, we will analyse the violence of the War, so the weather and the conditions, then the pain and the fear felt by Shadrack. Then, we will see how traumatistic World War I was through its consequences on Shadrack.
