Organ transplantation ranks as one of the success stories of modern technological medicine. This technique consists in moving a whole or partial organ from one body to another, for the purpose of replacing the recipient's damaged or failing organ with a working one from the donor site. Organ transplantation has totally changed the society: since the mid-twentieth century, transplantation has become a well-established treatment, able to prolong life and to improve the quality of life for many patients with end-stage organ failure. However, with an increase in demand for organs that is superior to the number of organ donors, waiting lists are longer and longer and patients cannot have any guarantee that they will be transplanted someday. Organ transplants have been a genuine revolution in medicine, saving and changing the lives of many patients. However, transplantations also have some disadvantaged which prevent this modern surgery from being totally beneficial to society.
