In chapter 20, V is confronted to a dilemma: reason versus pressure / threats. Indeed the monster wants him to create a female monster. But V is aware that such a creation can be very dangerous... While V is in the middle of an important reflection, the monster appears...
To study this extract, we're going to focus in a first part on the literary influence because it's obvious that different elements of the Gothic movement are present here. Then, in a second part, we're going to study the confrontation between Victor and his creature as it's the major interest of the passage.

The extract I'm going to talk about is the 20th chapter of the famous Gothic horror story, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus. The novel, written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818, deals with the story of a young Swiss student who discovers the secret of animating lifeless matter. Full of ambition, he creates, by assembling body parts, a creature who turns out to be a monster. Rejected by his creator and then the whole society, the monster will take his revenge, killing all the people Victor Frankenstein loved (...)
