Résumé

Shakespeare, an author of the 16th century made his name thanks to his tragedies, comedies, or historical plays.

He was inspired by various ancient authors, mythology or by the Greek history.

Towards 1595, he composed A Midsummer Night's Dream, a comedy which was published in 1600. It is said that this play has been ordered for a marriage and that it was performed in a castle during this ceremony.

In this play, many themes are presented and the notion of time seems very important.

But what is the place of time and what is its representation in A Midsummer Night's Dream?

First, time can be a concrete time, with human temporality and festival time. The moon is very present in A Midsummer Night's Dream and is seen as the embodiment of human time with its phases and its symbolism. Historical time is also very important as Shakespeare was greatly inspired by other authors.

Then, time can be the time of night, which is the time of fairies in this play and also the time of dreams which are a manipulation of time.

Finally, it is important to consider time in theatre. Pyramus and Thisbe, the play within the play is a sort of parody of time. The passing of time in theatre is also a point to explain as it is seen differently from time in reality.
