Résumé

This passage is taken from a novel entitled Jasmine, published in 1989 and written by an Indian writer, Bharati Mukherjee. It deals with the difficulties an Indian girl is confronted with, in the Indian society. As a matter of fact, a girl is considered as a burden in her family, and faces a bleak future. Through an authentic account, the author tends to recall and to make us aware of the plight of women in developing countries, which is at the core of her autobiographical project. The text is built around 4 main themes. One of the most important is the opposition between boys' and girls' destinies. However this theme is counterbalanced by the theme of mother and daughter's solidarity, a sort of complicity which is somewhat overpowered by the weight of religion and tradition.
