Globally, 40.3 million people are currently living with HIV. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. The first cases of AIDS appeared in Africa then quickly extended to Asia and Eastern Europe. Later, it reached the richest countries (Western Europe and the United States). Figures show that most of infected people are between 20 and 40 years old. Today one African on 12 is HIV-positive.
