Résumé
Pride and Prejudice portrays rural society in the 1790's, a period when the majority of the population still lived in the country, with a traditional hierarchy of aristocracy, commoners and peasants. Pre-Industrial Revolution England was still a place of fields, farms and rustic villages. The English are proud of their rural landscape, which was a neat patchwork of fields and hedges. Landscape gardens -designed to look like areas of natural beauty- were popular with the landed gentry.
