Commentary : the Industrial Revolution. In the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries, Great Britain was the first country to experience an Industrial Revolution which deeply transformed British economy and society. The eighteenth and nineteenth century were marked by major changes in economy and society. The main characteristics of the first Industrial Revolution were the steam machine, coal, iron, textile industry and urban growth. Moreover, Britain had been favoured thanks to its resources in raw materials, its colonial empire, its inventors and its growing population.
