Résumé
Originally was sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi commissioned to design a sculpture before 1876, to commemorate the centennial American Declaration of Independence. It was decided that this statue would be a joint effort between the States and France : American were to build the pedestal, and French were responsible for the Statue and its assembly in the USA.
Bartholdi required the assistance of a French engineer, Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower, to deal with structural issues due to the gigantic sizes of the statue. He was especially commissioned to design skeletal framework which allows the Statue's copper skin to move independently.
The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884, and was officially given to Americans on the 4th of July. Then she was taken down, reduced to 350 individual pieces, packed in 214 crates and arrived in New York Harbour in June, 1885 on board the French frigate Isere.
